Tips on purchasing things in Cusco

The majority of the handcrafted products of Peru originate from Cusco, specifically woven fabrics. The craftsmen of Cusco still use old weaving methods and many of the choicest cloths in South America come from here. There is no better place to be than Cusco for top rate Andean.
Typical items you can purchase are woolly alpaca jumpers, scarves, mantas, mittens, hats, quilts, ponchos, silver jewelry, ornamennts, attractive pottery and duplicated paintings from the prestigious Escuela Cuzqueña

There are many unique shopping opportunities to be had in Cusco, including shops and people selling their wares on the street, such as handicrafts, ornaments, Andean artistry influenced in pre Columbian  and distinct foods. There are options for everyone, no matter what your personal allowance. Bargaining is part of the culture and generally the first price stated is elavated.

The  markets are a great cultural experience with wonderful food options with lots of organic fruit and vegetables, bread, meat, cheese and all the commodities you can think of. There are also small snack and juice stalls. In the bigger markets you can buy handicrafts, such as blankets or woolly gear and cheap gifts. If you are looking for holiday keepsakes, the very large Centro Artesanal Market is situated on Avenida El Sol.

Just half an hour bus ride away is the little town of Pisac in the Sacred Valley of the Incas which has its popular and traditional out door markets. The prime days to visit are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. En route to Pisac you can see charming mountainous landscape. The market is situated in the centre of town. Nearby is the small town of Chincheros where there is a Sunday fair where you can also find charming artesania.

The area of San Blas is instantly discernible and is known as the artisan quarter. It was called Tococache in Inca times. Many artists and artisans live here. It is also home to famous International artists such as the Mendivil, Olave and Merida families. There are many shops, galleries and art work shops. In the little shops of the area you will find replicas of the Escuela Cuzqueña’s religious paintings. There are also great pottery stores and a little crafts market in the plaza on Saturdays.
You can also shop on the Cuesta San Blas and the Hatunrumiyoc nearing the Plaza de Armas.
